It's not worthless. It isn't specifically geared toward any one particular career, (which is probably why she chose it) but instead a general degree that can help get into a bunch of fields.

Dude please. A degree in English literature is practically worthless in the real world, where people get pricey jobs based on advanced degrees. Most English Lit majors (if they are even able to find jobs) go back into teaching positions, some into fairly decent positions in PR, marketing and advertising. Again, in the intellectual world - where people are actually literate - it's extremely admirable. Except the average person spends way too much time watching tv and playing video games.

For instance, when was the last time you read a book? oh and comic books don't count. ;)

I'm reading now. The Crossing by Cormac McCarthy. I'll finish the Border Trilogy before I get back to reading a history of 14th century Europe. Anyway, you just gave a few examples of jobs that an English lit degree can get you, so it's obviously not worthless. And here's a list from one school of careers that can be attained with such a degreee: http://englishcomplit.unc.edu/english/undergrad/careers

I just love the way Emma Watson graduating a prestigious university brings out the losers who think they're doing something more than showing how pathetic they are bagging on her.

Nobody wins doing that. And the only ones who lose are the ones who do it.

That's like expecting Coca-cola or McDonald's to be truthful about the health effects of their food. Of course universities (even Ivy League) are going to do a hard sell - to the f'n moon - regarding the marketability of these liberal arts degrees in the humanities.

Here's a real world example of what an English Lit degree, no matter how admirable, actually affords people who aren't rich/famous actresses. I picked an British University, since that is likely where Emma would be looking for employment. It looks far more abysmal than your rosy view.

Oh and congrats on being literate. :) Just realize in the US, where Brown is located, you are more the exception than the rule.

Man she just keeps getting better looking. And of course she didn't need the degree...for some people it's just the feeling of accomplishment that matters. Think about it, after some healthy sex, would you rather eat, watch TV and chat with Emma or one of those mindless Kardashian chicks?

Lol! So we can't trust universities to be honest about how their degrees can be applied (which is a silly claim to begin with, since the information is available everywhere) but you'll cite a university as an attempt to discredit my claim? Uh...okay...

Anyway, your link doesn't contradict anything mine said, it's just more comprehensive. It still shows that an english degree offers a wide variety of career and educational paths. In fact, it only contradicts what YOU said, about how most english majors go into teaching; your link says most find careers outside of teaching,

So, again (and for the last time) it isn't a useless degree. It's simply more broad than some. Oh, and the literacy rate in the US is 99%, so I'm certainly not the exception to the rule.

Umm... literate has more than one English meaning, as in someone who's well-versed in literature - with a capitol L.

Only 52% of Kent University English majors went onto gainful full-time employment after completing their degree. Those are some impressive statistics. Makes me want to run and quickly get the same degree before they're all taken!!! F- computer science and electrical engineering majors. :)

The stats only cover six months after graduation. Employment rates for the humanities is actually really high:Like this articke says, humanities grads do just as well, employment-wise, as computer-, math-, and social-related majors, and psychology. Yes, there are higher unemployment rates than business and pre-med majors, but it's not like anyone is actually choosint between those and the humanities.

And the pay is pretty great, depending on where you go with it. So, again, not at all useless.
