Boy, hunting sucked today. I have loggers off to my SE. They are close enough I could hear the pines hit the ground. Then rain came in for a couple hours. I'd just about throw my hands up...

Had a few days like that duck hunting several decades ago.....damn weekend fishermen in their 100 HP boats! They can destroy 100 hours worth of homemade (hand carved) duck decoys in a matter of seconds.

I just picked the wrong week to take off. I've seen more hunting dogs,9, than I have deer or bear. Don't even get me started on the "kids" riding up and down the road trying to kill something in the fields! :pat:

I quit using hard carved, well duck, many years ago. Have a couple of dozen carved geese that has been in the family for decades, many decades.

At the time, it was our only option.....had a source of scrap cedar and would glue a block of wood together, etc., then paint. We could not afford to buy decoys. And, I believe ours worked better than the cheap store bought ones did. Still took about 5 hours to make one, but it was entertaining during those years I had no TV to watch....many a winter night carving by the light of the fireplace...

Couldn't afford the store bought decoys either. B.Frank, my Granddad had told us he had carved them as a kid. He would have been 97 this year and I know I've had them since my early 20s.

Up close they aren't really all that pretty. Take a gander, :biglaugh:, from 30 feet and they are lifelike.

I will see if I can find a pic of what we call a mantle bird that he has done and post here to PM you with it.....they sell for between $1,500 and $3,500 now.

That is really beautiful work! Have you ever made your way up to the Core Sound Decoy Festival? If you're still into it, definitely should be on your list of to-dos!

This is be best I could find on such short notice:

    [IMG] [IMG]

He has done herons and large hawks that he sold for $7,500......not that much when you consider he worked on them for over 4 months each.

My brother has gone to a few wildlife wood carving major get-togethers over the past 3 decades or so....he got into the fine detailing, such as individually carving primary feathers then gluing them in place, wood burning in the feather veins, and the painting. I have not done any decoy construction in about 34 years.
