The picture was controversial for showing actress Tatum O'Neal topless as at the time of filming she was just under sixteen years of age. The film's "******" type theme was also controversial despite the fact the relationship between the painter and the young writer was platonic.


Actor Richard Burton was 53 years old when he made this film whilst actress Tatum O'Neal was just under 16 years. The characters they played were 60 years and 16 years respectively, Burton being seven years younger than his character whilst O'Neal basically played her own age. The age difference between the actors was 38 years, the age difference between their characters was 45 years. At the time of the film, Burton was married to Susan Hunt who was aged 32 years, 21 years younger. Burton's leading lady in his previous film Lovespell (1981) had been 34 years of age, 19 years younger.

I accept this, but as you can see in post #15864, i checked with the IMDB web site and got that info from their profile of the film and tatum o'neal before posting the gif, so i was led to believe that she was actually 18 when the film was released.
