    That is NOT a bikini, it is a retro 1940s or late 1930s swim suit--sexy for its day but not for today. When will we be seeing those 1920s swimming costumes and have them called "bikinis". Jeesh.

    2 observations: That first bikini looks like it laces all the way down, and that last bikini bottom shows what might be a piercing.

    Nice pictures - very fun thread- everyone's comments. And I will add mroe. yes- Way too much material to call these bikinis. Comparisons with retro 1940s or late 1930s are appropriate. But the material is some is is something wearer would not want to get wet. let call this more in 1960s inspired hippy-dippy costumes.

    First of all, the "bi" does not mean two!!! The bikini was named after the atoll in the Pacific where the US set off some atomic and hydrogen bombs. Because of the spectacular explosions, that is why the coined the "bikini" to describe the skimpy swim suit--BTW, the naming process was done back in the 1950s! Now if you somehow think that there is no difference take a look at the above pictures of Gemma Atkinson in her purple/pink bikini. That is a bikini!!!

    A bikini is a two piece swimsuit, originally designed in 1946, no matter how much fabric is involved. That has always been the case, regardless of the name origin.
