Actress Emma Watson is the latest UK personality to be named in the Panama Papers leak.

The Harry Potter actress’s name was found by The Spectator in a searchable database containing more details about the Panama Papers tax avoidance scandal.

The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) published data on more than 200,000 entities on its website on Monday evening. The database contains information on companies, trusts and foundations and users can see networks involving the offshore companies.

Watson’s spokesperson who was now forced to confirm that the 26-year-old had indeed set up an offshore company noted that she does not receive any tax or monetary advantages whatsoever. Instead, the spokesperson said she uses it for privacy purposes.

“Emma (like many high profile individuals) set up an offshore company for the sole purpose of protecting her anonymity and safety,”

"UK companies are required to publicly publish details of their shareholders and therefore do not give her the necessary anonymity required to protect her personal safety. Offshore companies however do not publish shareholder details. Emma receives absolutely no tax or monetary advantages from this offshore company whatsoever – only privacy.” her spokesperson said in a statement.

With so much money she made so fast, its only natural to want to hide them since she's not going to make that much anymore.

If I had millions in assets I'd do the same thing. It's not illegal to squirrel away your money in Monaco or the Cayman Islands, so who cares?

About time this story got back in the news cycle. I remember hearing about this two months ago on the late late late night news. Both well known politicians and entertainers are both in on this "massive" list of people involved in company, that was hacked, that set up fake off shore companies for tax evasion purposes. Supposedly, they were going to start revelling the politicians involved back in April, and entertainers involved in May. Before Prince's death, a few of the politicians were named; then story was dropped from all major news cycle. Now it looks like they're sticking to entertainers part of the story. I never would've guest Emma Watson was involved with all of this. WOW!!!!

Isn't that a form a tax evasion? And the last time I checked, that's very illegal.

Not if you've already paid tax on the money you've put there...!! facts are so crucial when you're determined to dig at someone for whatever reason...

Its not exactly what you would call tax. They essentially pay a fee for a firm to provide the expertise that allows Emma and many others to stay just on the right side of the law—or far enough into the legal grey zones that they'll never see the inside of a court room. It's opportunistic and perhaps unethical, but not criminal.

I'm assuming it's the younger members that grew up on Harry Potter movies...they are now angered since they assumed she would jump into some arthouse type movies with tons of nudity immediately after turning 18. Like she owed them something.

But instead they realised she's extremely rich and she's doing what she wants..... Ivy league degree, attended Oxford, UN Ambassador, giving speeches at world forums, taken up personal causes (female empowerment, etc..).
Basically she's now worthless/idiot simply because she's not nude for the fanboys (these are the same types that hate her outspoken feminism. Shocking!)

It's not tax evasion any more than having your money in a bank is tax evasion.

This leak and the firm related to it is a lot like a pipe store. Some people use pipes to legally smoke tobacco, some use them to smoke illegal substances, and some use them to smoke substances that aren't legal in some places and are in others. There are completely legit reasons to have your assets hidden, and you can do so within the boundaries of the law. If you earn income on said assets, then you probably have to pay tax on it in your home country.

Christ, people hear the words 'offshore,' 'blind trust,' or 'corporation' and they think all of sudden we're dealing with some crazy criminal shit.

You're being stupid, why would Emma or anyone try to hide the money that's already been officially and legally accounted for? She would just put it in a bank account if taxes are paid.

That's an interesting question. So interesting that I'd imagine that nearly every single article/result from a google search on this subject would answer it for you.

You can have an offshore bank account without it being for tax-evading reasons.

You can also have a bong without it being for pot-smoking reasons.

Or at least, so i am being told....

She believes that women deserve equal rights, dignity and respect to men, and says so in public, and has sufficient wealth and power that she can't be silenced.

This threatens pathetic assholes who are threatened by the idea that they don't have natural rights to dominate, threaten, or rape women.
