Westworld

Might be something i need to check out down the line. Not really in a tv series period in my life, but i really enjoyed the feature from the 70s. The dominating performance by Yul Brunner as the silent black dressed gunslinger is still very much remembered.

 

I thought it was interesting that they are taking a different tact than the film -- in the film, the "androids" getting sentient and attacking was the horror. In the series, they are clearly asking us to side with the androids, at least to some extent.

 

The 2nd episode was released a couple days early, so it's out there if you want it. I'm loving this show so far. It's well worth the time and money spent on it.

 

Build a western park full of real life androids to make money?
They could just sell these androids as sex bots to people and as soldiers to the military to make a lot of money!

 

I plan to watching it after a couple of episodes are out. So far I've just seen the intro, which I thought was fantastic.

 

usually im not really enthousiastic about new syfy since there were so many let downs

 

it is on HBO not syfy.

 

There's a lot the producers never thought through.
The social fallout of such life like robots alone would change society as we know it.
Sure the park is exclusively for the rich but I bet those same deep pockets would pay handsomely to buy one host especially if they can have it designed to look like someone real.

 

the term 'syfy' isn't just a channel, its a term for a genre of films...! though usually written 'sci-fi', these days people aren't so fussy..

perhaps check before being so presumptuous..?

 

My big hope as far as Westworld nudity goes is Shannon Woodward, which is admittedly the least likely. She did kiss that prostitute robot though, so who knows...

 

You have to suspend your disbelief a bit to enjoy it. However, I thought the same thing early on in Episode 2 when the new guest is being introduced. Who would want to play cowboys & Indians when you could have sex with endless supermodel quality robo-babes.

 

I kind of like the show... Just saw the pilot and interested to see where it goes.

 

I get the feeling that Anthony Hopkin's character (Dr. Robert Ford) is going to be similar to John Hammond in the original Jurassic Park novel (not the movie character, they were nothing alike), which would make sense since both stories were created by Michael Crichton. Of course, Crichton had nothing to do with show, and it's early on so it's possible my impression is off the mark. Oddly enough I've read every Chrichton novel except Westworld, an oversight I need to correct.

 

I like it so far. I'm finding it's one of those shows where I have to watch the episodes more than once to catch all the dialog and some of the details. The eye candy doesn't hurt either.

 

I'm wondering how many, if any, 'humans' turn out to be droids. How would anyone in the 'world' of the series know?

Maybe ones who like feeling of bein' 'heroes' - with sex bein' only an icing on the cake?

PS Looks like series is rethinking same questions as 'Bladerunner', 'Vice', 'Almost Human' (oh, and 'new BSG'/Caprica) and lot of other movies, shows and books - that damned 'playing God' and racial stuff mix.

PS2 Watched old flick - well, i guess Cameron was inspired by it in the time - not only by 'Outer Limits'

 

SPOILER POTENTIAL!!!

I have neither seen the movie nor read the book, so I am new to the story. Thus far I have 2 questions:
1. How do they keep one "guest" from killing another? Episode 2, the "experienced" guest took aim at another guy in the saloon. How could he know if he was aiming at a guest or a host?

2. I get the impression that Ed Harris is looking for this "maze" to find some secrets of the park. Why would they allow him to continue, since these secrets could be harmful to the business if discovered?
