    It's gotten so bad and prevalent here that we had national suicide awareness month just recently. As one of my favorite bands said in a recent music video, the epidemic of depression and addiction is real and we've been losing far too many in this battle. I won't bullshit, cause I'm sure Sophie hates bullshitters, I've been there. More than once and have been in a bad cycle as of late and I do what I feel necessary to keep going, whether that counts as addiction probably depends on your perspective. I've lost a close friend to it, other friends of mine have lost people they love to it, it haunts them to this day; it's a demon that can strike you out of nowhere and doesn't care what your finances are or how popular and successful you are. Mental health care has become so damn expensive here or completely ignored for a few generations(how many times have we heard something like "toughen up, get over it" as the solution?) that when you hear someone has died you immediately think about if it was suicide or an overdose. And we as a society are suffering the consequences now.

    I'm not going to be so crass as to pretend I share the suffering that is so clearly present around and amongst us. I've lost loved ones - sure, who hasn't? - but "only" to old age and cancer, apart from a schoolmate who died in a freak accident. I admit I had my moments with those tragedies that we all know we'll face over time, but I can barely imagine the all-consuming and ongoing misery, isolation and helplessness that depression, compulsive behaviour, addiction and drug dependency inflicts on sufferers and those around them.

    I'm an atheist, so I can't consider myself "blessed", but I do count myself lucky (so far), and my heart goes out to phunners who might be in the throes of dealing with such issues, either personally or indirectly. For those that are, there's not a lot that we can do for each other in this environment, but I would hope that phun.org and fellow phunners might contribute an occasional chink of light into a gloomy world, a half-smile to relax a frown, and a few moments respite from a daily grind?

    I recall bigbee was very grateful when he dealt with the most intense part of his grief following his moms passing. So we shouldnt sweep the importance of a place to talk under the rug.
