I don't have a high threshold, I would just like to see an IMDB or wiki so I can find out if I accidentally saw them in something. Just having an Insta with a few thousand followers is nothing, that could be anybody. Check out the socialmediagirls forums for that, this is the "celeb" section of a forum with traditionally higher standards than that, I'm here because I expect those standards to be met.

I was merely pointing out that it's unbelievable to me that someone would assume anyone would immediately recognize her. I grow weary of that just as much as you grow weary of people that grow weary of that.

We're fighting the same fight here, we're just on different hills. There's a million places to see random boobs, I have this tag of this subforum bookmarked because I want to see very exactly one type of thing, so every time I open it and see someone's friend's cousin's roommate that was an extra in the background of a CW show in 2004 and get told I'm an idiot because I don't recognize them, my standards for the specific thing I'm here for get chiseled away a little bit.

I'm not mad. I just want to maintain quality.

 

I get you. I do. I’m stunned by some of the ladies posted that people say they don’t know and they are in something popular now or a few years ago. Then they admit that they don’t watch TV or movies. “Why would you know this celebrity if you don’t follow the thing they do?”. I generally don’t recognize any of the European celebrities (generally) but I enjoy and move on. I get tired of the whining on either side, frankly. I also generally get tired of every thread where someone has to inform me what they would do or want to do to said celebrity. But that is phun I guess and I move on.

In the oops thread, there are tons of people I absolutely know nothing about and I’m able to name a lot of actresses when a TV show comes up or a movie. I’m pretty versed I guess what I’m saying. In that last page, I’m very aware of Anya and Kate and I know Brook only because of this site. /shrug. Still enjoy the contributions.

 

I get what you mean. All celebrity is contextual of course. Someone can be a celebrity in their town, in their state/province, in their country. Someone can be a celebrity only within their industry (like "rock star" coders). It's fair to say that leak posters shouldn't rely on their own judgement and assume we know who a celebrity is, so provide an iMDB link or whatever. If someone posted a leak for (say) Scarlett Johansson, you wouldn't be annoyed (or even notice) if they didn't provide a link and synopsis of who she is. To me it shows that posters will always be relying on their judgement, and it only bothers people when they don't personally already know who the celebrity is.

While I have the same reaction sometimes "who is that anyway? *checks* Nobody that interests me...", we're not drowning in leaks here so I don't think the volume is frequent enough for this to need a rule saying "explain the celeb". I can just shrug and move on, and it's not much scrolling. I understand if you have a lower threshold than I do for this. Just saying that I think it's far from that threshold for me.

 

Same! I'm stunned by some of the women posted that people say they don't know, even though they're relatively prolific or known actresses. They don't watch TV or movies, they don't listen to top 40 music or follow pop culture. Which is fine, but they obviously knew celebrities from when they were a kid. It's weird people don't acknowledge that a lot of the change is in ourselves getting older and more selective, rather than merely that "anybody is a celeb nowadays".

All celebrities have always been famous within a context, it's just that we have moved out from the contexts we followed as kids (such as movies/TV), and/or that we never entered new cultural contexts such as social media so don't know the celebrities in there.

If someone's grandparents or great-grandparents decided radio was enough and never got into that new-fangled "television" thing, then in America they would never have heard of Bob Ross, David Letterman, Lucille Ball, etc. but no-one would agree with those grandparents if they denied those people were celebrities. Similarly if we decide not to get into social media that's fine, but we don't also get to declare that famous people on social media aren't celebrities just because we decided not to get into the new thing that a big proportion of people have.
