Vouge, cosmo and nearly every other fashion mag in america and europe already beat you to it. All those names basically="White Women". Pick one up (any one) and flip through it if you doubt my words.

Actually, it would be deemed "stupid" because the category is already well covered. There are literally thousands and thousands of magazines that cater specifically to white women. There are Latina magazines, Asian magazines, Black magazines and so forth primarily because these groups are not represented in Cosmo, Playboy and the other "mainstream" mags. This should be common sense, but I guess common sense isn't all that common.

If you need to fight for something, find a way to have the mainstream magazines include models at ratios that make up the population of america.

You are waaaay off base. How many white women are going to buy a mag called Black Women? And come on seriously, there are LITERALY thousands of magazine that cater to white woman? That's an outrageous statement. You have to look at who is buying the majority of magazines in general in order to look at what the demand is out there.

Elle and other fashion mags do not exclude any race. White woman may be the main target in their demographics but they would never/could ever, say WHITE WOMEN MAG. They want everyone to read their magazine. There are tons of women of color in the fashion model industry anyway, that's crazy to say that's one sided. Ever watch a runway show? Have you seen the show Top Model? Janice Dickinson agency? I would even go as far as to say that there is a larger demand for more exotic looking women.

All I was implying was that it's nuts that in this day and age, there is actually a magazine caled 'Black Women'. We 'work' so hard for equality as a country but a lot of times minorities segregate themselves, this magazine being a perfect example.

And isn't a typical liberal move to tell someone what they should be fighting for?

whew...ok, I'll give this a go, but you should actually read my last post and then comment on the things that you've READ. I could address each of your points, but most of that is covered already if you bother to actually read my last two posts.

As far as the thousands comment, I'm speaking more of the ratio of magazines for white women as opposed to the magazines for non-white women. Would you be happier if I said that there were a lot more white women magazines than black women magazines? I was not trying to throw out an exact number, but I think you can gather my point. Oh, and I don't think that they're trying to get white women to buy the magazines, but I doubt that they'll stop them at the registers either.

While Elle, Cosmo, and Vogue may not intentionally exclude, they don't necessarily include either. You should pick up a black woman magazine and browse through it. It goes beyond pictures and the name of the mag. The ads are different. The articles are different (not always great though). They do things like give hair care advice and companies that specialize products for Black Women and things that Cosmo can't (or won't) cover. I don't think it has to do with any of the things that you're thinking of, but that's probably because you're just not aware of the scope or depth of this issue. You seem to think it's just about the pictures.

Here's a question: If you take away all of the ethnic magazines (i.e., Black Women, Latina, etc...), what do you recommend that Black and Latina women read? Cosmo? Harpers? Vogue? They already do. But those don't quite cover it all. Look at and read a few of those magazines from the perspective of a black woman (you might have to try real hard) and you may begin to see that they can be a little alienating.

Aaaah...I'd argue that your post and your implications are perfect examples of what happens when fearful people don't understand and don't take the time to think things through. Many of the women who buy and subscribe to Black Women also subscribe to Cosmo, Elle, Harpers and many more mags. I don't think that this is a case of minorities "segregating themselves." I think minorities just want to see and read about their issues too. Just stop by a beauty shop in your area (one that caters to black women) and see if I've mislead you. You'll find all of those magazines there. In fact pick one up the next time you're in a grocery store and check it out (the mag, not the black woman). Hell, purchase it and take it home and see for yourself. Nobody will stop you or look at you funny (screw 'em if they do), and you might learn something. You might even like it.

-The liberal dude who tells people what to fight for.
