WHY ARE SOME DVD’S HARDER TO RIP ?

Some content appears less frequently, in part because it is harder to copy.
At times it is the coded protection, sometimes the player has problems, but the truth is that many of the discs don’t want to copy because they will hardly play. Some studios intentionally weaken the structure and stability of the recording, or load a bunch of invisible garbage into a second layer of a dual layer disc so that it becomes much harder to copy without giving you some sort of cyclical redundancy errors. Some of the smart guys who take this approach end up with fewer people able to copy, and a lot of people returning the discs to the store or movie renter because they could not play them at all, especially if they try and play it on a computer DVD drive. These SPEED BUMPS as they are sometimes called, make it necessary to copy what you can of the VOB files that are not seeded with “errors”, and then recode them with NERO, or somehow edit them. With so much stuff available, most of the time this content gets ignored. Examples of this speed bump approach that screws up the laser tracking on your player include some of Joey Silvera’s “Service Animal’ and ‘Vault” offerings. Private takes this approach at times, as do a lot of the major studios.

Yes, a screen capture utility can be useful at times, especially when there is coded copy protection that allows you to watch, but not directly copy.
Most coded protection can even be broken, but speed bumps are another matter. These are defects, errors, potholes, SPEED BUMPS put in the ‘wiggle grooves’ to throw your tracking off. Sometimes an inexpensive DVD player will do OK, in part because it’s a DVD-ROM (read only). The more sophisticated DVD recorder/players in your computer must have their tracking optimized for both reading, and writing, unlike a DVD-ROM that can dedicate its specs entirely to the task of reading.
Think of the DVD-ROM drive like an AK-47, not as sophisticated or accurate, but it will continue to function under poor conditions, it’s more forgiving.
In most cases, if you can’t copy it with your computer DVD recorder because of speed bumps, you likely will not be able to watch it on your computer. Even the best decrypter is useless in these cases. Without being able to display it, you will be unable to use such a program.
One option is to hook up a DVD player to your computer via analog connections in order to use a screen capture device, but in this case you can probably use analog connections and then convert back to digital without needing to use it.
Keep in mind, that most capture software give you less than the best resolution, and you might have to put up with a reduction in frame rate
