The reason for smaller sig sizes is, again, because of Phun's size -- the number of people. Even though it can be proven that one size can be the same size in mb as another size, people don't know how to optimize the mb's that their sigs are. Every time a page is refreshed, that pulls more mb's from the sig host. Phun has been dis-allowed from one host, I think, and other hosts see us and go, "Oh, nooooo!"

When I've made sigs, I've always wanted more height, too -- not width. I'm still amazed that people don't mind the height but want wider sigs. But, it IS an art form, and, in art, nobody is "right."

 

It depends on who is using cached reloads and who is using fresh reloads. When you reload a page in this thread, and if new comments have been added, I believe it is a fresh reload from the server.

 

I just made a 400x200 sig (from 36 layers) - no compression - and it was still under 200kb

 

TBH i dont know how it is with other browsers, but with firefox the normal "F5" is just a cached reload, but "CTRL+F5" means a new reload, so every image and icon gets downloaded again.

 

That sounds pretty small for what you described -- but you're an expert!

For fast page re-loading, I don't think a sig should be larger than 50-75 kb. For a contest, maybe go bigger if you can see a difference. But page-load time is still slow for those with slower connections, so it's kinda polite, imho.

 

In most browsers, you can set the reload prefs yourself before you even begin. Most people don't know how to do that.

 

I have mine set to fresh reload, so I'm up to date on other sites when I reload.

Come to think of it, if I entered a contest, I'd make that sig a larger file, just in case. Or I'd make 2 versions -- sometimes a smaller version looks better, for whatever reason. :?
