Um.....Halle Berry (Monster's Ball), Heather Graham (Boogie Nights, among others), Vanessa Redgrave (Blow Up....and yes, it's *that* Vanessa Redgrave), Marilyn Monroe (in Playboy, but I'm counting that), Robin Wright (Forrest Gump), Uma Thurman, Jessica Biel (in Gear magazine), Drew Barrymore (Playboy again), Hedy Llamar (let's face it, who knows her for anything else?), pretty much every french actress in the last 30 years....need I continue?

I would love to welcome Michelle to the club. Along with a few others (come on, Ellen Page!).

 

You are right, nobody has heard of Hedy Llamar.

Now, Hedy Lamarr on the other hand was a very talented actress and quite clever lady. Just because you only know her for boobery doesn't mean that is all she amounts to.

As for the boob thing...either get them out early or don't bother. I've noticed that early career nudity rarely hurts an actress, and allows her to do further nudity without question. However, ladies who never go nude, but do so later on, seem to always enjoy a very brief career boost followed by near obscurity. The 'hey, she finally went nude' thing is a novelty by that point, and cannot rescue a career. Going nude late is almost an act of desperation.

Forgive me, I did not bother to spell check. And while she was indeed a talented actress, and made some interesting films, they were primarily in the 30s, and for any generation that knows how to use a computer, she is primarily known for being the first actress to go nude on screen (or for being a joke in "Blazing Saddles"). I've yet to meet many people under the age of 60 who has heard of her for any other reason, and, though I recognize that this sounds like the idle boast of an internet loon, I do travel in circles that tend to know a great deal about film.

And while I agree, showing skin results in a fleeting career boost if any for most actresses, my point was that, in contrast to an earlier comment from another user, it did not always amount to so little. There are plenty of examples of actresses who went nude to further their careers, either because they had a demanding role that required nudity (Eva Green, as yet another example, or even Liv Tyler in yet another Bertolucci film), or simply because they wanted to be recognized as more serious actresses after a career of relatively silly or childish roles (including the aforementioned Jessica Biel, among many others). Of course, these roles do not always accomplish goals for the actresses in question, but in certain cases they have indeed furthered the actresses' careers in the long run. Biel and Tyler were established by that time, as were Vanessa Redgrave and Halle Berry, just to reuse my earlier examples. Meryl Streep and Laura Linney, two of the finest middle-aged actresses around in my opinion, both did only very limited nudity early in their careers, and stripped down much more liberally later. Even Julie Andrews did a nude scene only at the midpoint of her career, with a great deal of fine acting both before and after - hardly an act of desperation. To be sure, you are correct that many actresses who go nude do so out of desperation and fail to reap any career benefits from it, but there are many examples that prove just how weak that rule is.

Anyway, I went to this thread to enjoy the beauty of a girl that I would rather like to see naked, irrespective of the point in her career arc where it occurs. So, back to ogling.

 

Showing skin has nothing to do with any of that. Halle Berry won a fucking Oscar for her performance in Monster's Ball. Boogie Night's was an Oscar-nominated film that Heather herself got nominated for her performance in. Forrest Gump was an Oscar-winning film, and Robin Wright never actually showed anything.

So before you "need continue", you should "need revise" the crap you've already said. You're talking about actresses in arguably their most prominent roles, in films or performances that garnered awards, so the nudity is incidental and totally irrelevant to their career. And in most cases, they were known commodities before their nude roles. Halle Berry is a great example of this; she was an international movie starlet looooong before she ever showed her tits in Swordfish.

Speaking of Swordfish--which was the first time Halle ever showed her goods--it was a flop. So was "The Gift", which was the first and only time Katie Holmes showed her tatas. If nudity forwarded careers, why were those films unsuccessful? I'll tell you why: Because nudity is no boost to a career.

Drew Barrymore was earning Golden Globe awards before she ever appeared in Playboy. Jessica Biel was on a popular television show for years before the Gear Magazine spread, and it was years again before she started appearing in prominent films.

So, again, nudity never made anybody's career. Marilyn Monroe was already a covergirl and contract girl and famous before she ever appeared in Playboy. Just because her Playboy spread has become so famous in retrospect does not mean it was the most important, nor the first, thing she did. She was famous long before that.

 

Ok, before you once again decide to pick a fight with me, try understanding my point, rather than attacking a straw man: I AM NOT SAYING THAT NUDITY ALWAYS HELPS CAREERS. I AM SAYING THAT, ON OCCASION, IT DOES. The scenes I mentioned were examples of nudity that helped the careers of the actresses in question. It did not create their fame in all cases. Again, stop trying to make a straw man out of someone who merely wanted to make a small point, which has yet to be disproven. I disagree with the notion that nudity *never* helps careers, because I believe it does help at times.

Now, I am done with this argument. I'm going back to appreciating the women on this board. If you wish to continue arguing with nobody, be my guest.
