I think that's a little harsh. And inaccurate. She was a really popular Nick kid, and turned that popularity into a decent movie career. She's stalled out lately, but that seems to be by her own choice than anything else.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not rushing to her defense or anything, I'm just saying, let's not act like she's Kim Kardashian or Paris Hilton. She actually worked for her money and status.

 

My theory on her decision to semi-retire is because she was only receiving racier and nuder film offers and she still thinks like a Disney/Nickleodeon 16 year-old actress. She's probably waiting for another television role to come her way but the writing is on the wall that any film career will require an adjustment in her attitude because there are only so many Sandra Bullock film roles available in Hollywood and Ms. Bullock already has them locked up. :2cent:

You may be on to something, though I'm reticent to say the roles she's being handed are nude and/or racy. When she "retired" she complained about never having a say in who her characters are, and I think that's probably at the heart of her issue. It seems she got tired of being the same best friend or generic lead actress in every movie she was in.

I have a feeling that Amanda's going to wind up in some really gritty indy film five years from now, and it'll either make her or break her as a serious actress, because I think that's what she wants to be. She wants to be creative and put herself into her roles. Her alternative, as you said, is to be the next Sandra Bullock, which I actually think she could be, since Sandra is in her 40s and already too old for her trademark roles. Amanda could be an heir apparent.

Then again, it could just be another case of a child actor losing their shit after a lifetime around fake people doing fake things. Hey, they're human, and maybe she was just sick of the lights and the 14-hour days and the yes men and diets and the bullshit. She's more of a veteran than most people she works with as it is.

 

The truth probably lies somewhere in the middle of what we both said.


And if she does do an "indie", here's hoping it's something more along the lines of 'Shortbus' than 'The Blair Witch Project'. But that's just me.

 

am i the only one that notices these disney/nickelodeon kids can't act for shit? talking loud and acting with very exaggerated faces is only fine when your audience is 8 year olds. they get the roles cuz they are cute kids and can take direction. when they grow older and do real movies, then the lack of talent becomes a problem. that's why she has to show her tits if she wants work.

 

That's a common problem for 99.999999% of all child actors, regardless of what network they start out on. The reason being is that the same skillset required to be a good child actor isn't the same one required for adults, and a lot of flaws are forgiven in child actors that aren't in adults.

But at the same time, I think it's as much about being a sitcom actor as it is about being a child actor. Think of your favorite sitcom, and then try to think of how many of its stars went on to do anything worth a shit afterwards. Where is the cast of Will & Grace today? Frasier? Aside from Jennifer Aniston, where the hell is the cast of Friends? Jason Alexander shows up every now and again, but where's everyone else from Seinfeld? For some reason, transitioning from TV success to other success is almost impossible. I think it's because the stuff that makes you a good sitcom actor doesn't make you a good film actor.

All that said, though, I think Nickelodeon puts on way better shows than Disney, and have way better actors. Not everything is good, but they've had some classics. Salute Your Shorts, anyone? Hey Dude? iCarly? Doug? Pete & Pete? Even The Amanda Show was kinda funny in an irreverent, silly way.

 

Agreed! What is wrong with these Disney/Nickleodeon starlets. Even their hero Angelina Jolie payed her dues by showing the goods when she was 21 in Foxfire (1996), and then again when she 23 in Gia [TV 1998] now I am not saying just do a skin flick, but when the the right movie script comes along they need to rise to a challenge. :lets_do_it_wild:
