The problem with complaining about people giving their opinion is that it's only your opinion that they shouldn't. And this is a discussion forum, after all. These aren't paparazzi pics, she's a person in the media who has put them into the public domain for the purpose of showing people how she currently looks, and it's obvious that people will have a response to that. If she's so sensitive to public opinion that she doesn't want to hear it then it might be wise for her to avoid things like Twitter. I don't think anybody here is seriously suggesting that Cyrus should tailor her own body to the preferences of this forum. I don't see why we can't all just tolerate the fact that other people think differently and calmly discuss why that is.

You opened yourself up quite handily to ad hominem remarks when you chose, instead of lucidly and earnestly advocating for your position, to be crass, offensive, insulting, derogatory, judgmental, and rude. You attacked everyone whose opinion differed from yours by calling them 'blind' or 'delusional.' You referred to a young woman as a 'mounting heap of shit' while knowing nothing about her beyond what the media has chosen to show you, you denigrated her talent, her accomplishments, and her intelligence. There was no 'failed argument' here because you weren't MAKING an argument or responding to one. You were spewing unsubstantiated, opinionated bullshit without any reason beyond 'hearing' yourself think.

If you want to state your opinion, fine. State it. But if you're going to do so in the most churlish, derogatory, hostile, and insulting way possible then you are basically trolling and you'd damn well better expect an ad hominem attack or two to be forthcoming. Well I should probably take the opportunity to apologize for being so blunt. But I won't, since that's one of the few products of this sort of conversation that I enjoy. xD

I would have agreed with the rest of your statement, if the subject matter was something a tad bit more definitive than a subjective matter of taste. Being so knowledgeable about the tenants of critical thought I would have assumed that you'd know that this conversation isn't subject to logical reasoning. There are no truths to be found here.

It is for this reason that our standards are factors when determining her talent, and it is for this reason that we are speaking of her appearance, through opinions.

I made a claim which I assumed anyone who was looking at the same pictures that I was would reach the same conclusion. Thereby the accusation that people are blind or delusional.

Nonetheless, I'll indulge this attempt at providing some foundation for the discussion:

First, I'd like to make it abundantly clear that I know nothing about this woman.

In fact I can count the three things that I do know about her:

1) Her name
2) What she looks like
3) What she does

And, as you could probably predict, I don't want to know anything more about her.

You've accurately stated at the end of your statement, that my basis for those remarks came from my fundamental dislike of her, not from any legitimate knowledge that I possess about her.

Now I should make it clear that I don't dislike her as a human being, since I don't know her as a human being, but rather as a symbol. It is what she represents in society that I loathe with such a fury.

I loathe her as a reflection of the countless destructive qualities which she has promoted in society. She is a corporate tool, an object used to promote materialism and senseless unwavering consumption at the consequence of a lost identity, the inability to differentiate true music (the variety that spawns from emotional and intellectual investment) from the mass-produced repetitive noise passed off as music, to reason for oneself without falling victim to external pressures. This entire genre of music feasts upon the insecurities of the troubled masses. People worried about how others treat them should they not enjoy the same drivel as those around them (I speak mostly of children, although adults are also very guilty of this tension, they choose not to admit it). And so it promotes conformity and thoughtlessness in the shadow of oppression.

So now you know why I get angered when a person, driven purely by material pursuits, with no artistic merits to speak of, receives so much attention.
