I think that depends on how quickly one of the other shows on NBC flops. It could conceivably come back as early as January, I believe, as it's scheduled to be a mid-season replacement.

Really, it could come back well before January. In fact, NBC is probably hoping it's still on the shelf come January because that means nothing flopped so hard it left a smoking crater in their schedule. Looking at the schedule, Chicago Fire in the Wednesday at 10 slot would seem to be the most logical one in terms of pure plug & play. Yank the flop and stick Smash in there with maybe a couple weeks of reruns of something to give a little more time for promotion. Another possibility is that a couple of their new comedies tank and they have to consolidate and open a slot; Tuesdays would be the logical destination then between The Voice and Parenthood. Or everything could work at least a little and NBC has the dream scenario where it has to give something some time off just so it can fit Smash in somewhere.

True enough... I went with January just because I don't know what Smash's current filming schedule is like , so I'm not sure how many episodes they will have in the can before then. But, given that we've been seeing set pictures of McPhee for the last month or so, you're right in that they probably have sufficient episodes to replace a show that tanks much earlier than January.
