Burt mostly said what I wanted to say on the subject. But I want to add the point that it does take more courage to go nude in a movie today than it did even when Helen stripped off for The Waterdance. Today every time an actress shows any nudity it winds up on thousands of websites and message boards, with scumbags like Analeezer talking about ramming it up her poop chute.

Many of the classic scenes such as the Phoebe Cates scene from Fast Times likely wouldn't have happened if the internet had existed then. As a male aficionado of boobs, it is easy to be cavalier and suggest that actresses should show all without giving a flying fuck, but when you know that that image of yourself will be out there available on the interwebs FOREVER, it should give any decent person some pause.

My point is that, yes, this does take courage for a number of reasons. She's almost 50. She's not in her prime (though I think she looks lovely). Wrinkles, warts and all, she knows this will be plastered all over the net (with assholes scrutinizing and crap-talking her appearance) for perpetuity. And, like in most cases of on-screen nudity, it probably was not necessary to advance the plot or narrative. So for these reasons I give Helen major respect for this brave move on her part.

 

I'm pretty sure the only time nudity has ever actually advanced a plot was in "Just One of the Guys" when Joyce Hyser reveals to her love that she has tits. Otherwise, I think the point of nudity on film is honesty or integrity. I often feel like I'm being treated like a child when a scene is shot from the neck-up where the actors are supposedly nude, or if they keep their back to the camera the whole time. I mean, okay, in comedies and stuff that's fine, but in a dramatic scene it tends to distract.
