Therefore, please do not use imagebam, or any host, that provides live playing gifs in those specific threads. If you see your gif playing once you post, try to use a smaller thumbnail and if that does not work use a different approved host.

    hi,

aside the fact that there may some who upload strange files as .exe-files (you better do not download them!!!) -

there are some filehosts (i´ve seen that on rapidgator, just don`t have a sample available) who offer some kind of "use our downloader"-option even for free users. these options do - no idea how - transform a good, valid file to an .exe-file while downloading.
in these case be careful not to choose this "downloader"-option and you`ll get the original uploaded file.

All filehosts hosts now have their own mydownloader box. You need to look before clicking on the DL button.

Yes, and also be careful with rar and zip files...I have seen infected files being added to compressed archives along with the video.

These type of files are often associated with rare videos like rough, weird fetish and vintage etc.

Glad I stumbled onto this thread.

That damn RG downloader was causing IE and Chrome to crash. And much of the time, the d/l never completed.

    Thx.

As a mod/supermod on other sites, I have been getting an earful from board members about this. Rapidgator was the first "major" host to try this, but got so many complaints, they (apparently) discontinued the practice. Filefactory is the newest biggie to try this, and several minor file hosts have now gotten into the act.

Generic download managers (like JDownloader, MiPony, et. al.) circumvent this automatically, but the matter of a host's own DM comes in to play only when downloading directly via their pages (not using a DM). It should go without saying that we should all be careful before clicking the "download" button, and take a second to scan the entire download page. Also take a quick second to ensure that when you click "download" the pop-up is exactly what you intend to download... if it's anything except what you're looking for, cancel the download, and send an angry note to the host, so they know that they're pissing off their customers. That's how RG stopped the practice so quickly.

And if you do inadvertently download the .exe files associated with these rogue downloaders, it's likely that your anti-virus will flag it, but not a guarantee. One thing you do not want to do is to install a host's download manager. One unfortunate victim spent the better part of a week finding and deleting all the crap, including registry entries, browser hijacks, and even an unwanted Firefox add-on that was stealthily installed.

Goes without saying... keep your firewalls and anti-virus up to date, and be extra vigilant about what you're downloading. It takes and extra second or two to make sure everything's kosher, but can prevent hours of trying to repair costly mistakes...
