My spin: Wow. The Slovakian qualifier, Lucia, pulled off the upset of the tournament so far, bouncing out a bonafide supermodel and our #11 seed. Carol now has the unwanted distinction of being the highest seeded model to be knocked out in the first round. In the other match, Melissa prevailed easily, as expected. That sets up a wide open Round 2 match, where it's quite possible Lucia's run through the tournament can continue.

My spin: I thought Kylie had a great chance to become the 7th qualifier to topple a seeded model, but Kim showed some great backing and won quite easily. In the other match, an expected victory for Bridget occurred. Damaris is pretty, but she's almost a forgotten SI model. Kim has to be considered the favorite going into the Round 2 match with Bridget.

Biggest surprise of Round 1:

Winner - Lucia Dvorska and her win over #11 seed, and supermodel, Carol Alt. I didn't see that one coming! Lucia had a fairly easy time in her two Qualifying Draw victories, but I didn't think she had the support to pull off an upset like she did.

Honorable mention - #1 Kathy Ireland's close 53%-47% victory over qualifier Jenna de Rosnay. The surprise here isn't the result, but rather it is the fact that Kathy was stretched to the limit in Round 1.

Most interesting upcoming Round 2 matches:

There are lots of them, but I'll limit my choices to three.

1) #5 Daniela Pestova vs. Nina Agdal - Daniela is obviously in the upper eschelon of SI models, but the only thing Nina lacks at this point is experience. She has the potential to end up as one of the top SI models, too.

2) Cindy Crawford vs. Laetitia Casta - Cindy came from the Qualifying Draw because of her limited SI experiences, but she really isn't in that class. She's a supermodel and will face another supermodel in Laetitia in Round 2.

3) #2 Cheryl Tiegs vs. Genevieve Morton - I honestly don't know what to expect from this match. It could be a lopsided win for Cheryl, or it could be very close. Neither result will surprise me in the least! The answer may come down to how much credit the voters give to Cheryl's many SI accomplishments, because there is no doubt that, on paper, Cheryl's accomplishments in SI far outweigh Genevieve's.

#1 Kathy Ireland and Laetitia Casta will face each other in Round 3 of the Main Draw.

My spin: #1 seed Kathy had a much closer than expected Round 1 match, but there was no such trouble in Round 2, as Lujan never stood a chance in this one. The other match was far more interesting, with two supermodels going back and forth, voting close the whole way. In the end, Laetitia prevailed, knocking Cindy out of this year's tournament. As far as the Round 3 matchup goes, I have no idea who will win that one! Again, two titans going at it. Laetitia certainly has the potential to kock off the #1 seed.

My spin: Chrissy had a very tough Round 2 assignment, and I think she may have advanced a little further if she had a different draw. Both of the seeded models had no trouble advancing to Round 3, where they'll be the first two seeded models to go head-to-head in this year's tournament. Both also enter Round 3 after having trounced their competition to this point, so it'll be very interesting to see who comes out on top.

My spin: Poor Daniela. Our hot #5 seed had the unfortunate luck of facing Nina in Round 2. As I mentioned in my preview of this match, the only thing Nina was missing when compared to Daniela is experience. Otherwise, Nina was as tough a match for Daniela as she would have seen in the late stages of the tournament, so to draw her in Round 2 is just tough luck. So, Nina prevails and moves on to face our second qualifier to advance to Round 3, Hannah. It's been a great showing in the tournament for Hannah!

My spin: As predicted, the match between Cheryl and Genevieve was very interesting, and it turned out to be incredibly close. In the end, Genevieve pulled off a huge upset and knocked off our #2 seed by the slimmest of margins. Meanwhile, qualifier Shannan Click disposed of her second Otis of the tournament, as she adds Libby to her victory over Carre in the Qualifying Draw. With the exception of this one, all of Shannan's victories have been close, but she still lays claim to reaching the final 32 of the tournament, despite starting off having to qualify for the Main Draw. Quite an accomplishment! The Round 3 matchup between Genevieve and Shannan is intriguing. You'd think someone who knocked off the #2 seed would be a big favorite, but Shannan has proven that she has lasting appeal.
