Like for example, there have been countless events of muggings and pickpocketing. Do you not carry your phone and your wallet around because of it?

They assumed, or weren't aware of, to be storing their stuff in a private, safe space online. Someone exploited a weakness in that system, and stole their stuff.

 

You assume that these files were kept after the news about a privacy alert. There are hints that the collection that's been surfacing had been assembled over months, even years, then shopped to various people behind the counter.
Various methods were employed to get the pictures. The recent iCloud brute force hack was definitely one of them, shared IDs for a Dropbox account another one, but there were a few others. The sources are also sometimes older. We got a few hours ago the full Scarlett Johansson collection, while two pictures of the same collection had surfaced last year. We assumed then that the guy who had been arrested couldn't find time to leak the others. But other people may have hacked her account around that time, or the guy actually sold the remaining pictures to people who kept them private for a while.

So, the celebrity may have deleted the video on her own, after one alert, but if her account was hacked before that, her files were already into somebody's computer. Not to mention that the boyfriend/significant other may not have taken the same precautions.

 

Exactly, if you're famous, it's like being covered in gold, walking through a slum in south-america and expect that nothing could go wrong.

 

In this case "walking through a slum in south america" translates to having the video in your phone, and backing up said phone in the iCloud.

 

I see that you still believe that your data is safe.. well you're probably not famous so you'll be ok

This could be the explanation, I don't believe any woman, let alone a famous woman, would save these videos for longer than a day without worrying about them.

 

I think that many of you forget that most people, not just celebs, simply don't spend time looking through their phone settings.
Be it, privacy, location, sync etc. They buy their phone and start using it. Same thing with facebook. If you remember some of these celebs were surprised their deleted pics were uploaded.
They simply didn't take the time to go through their sync settings.

Also, all the analogies you used - pickpocketing, walking around covered in gold - don't resemble at all to this case.
The worst you could say is that these celebs didn't take enough measures to prevent it, but they did not in any way caused it, brought it on them selves, or contributed.
Too many people make that jump from "how could they be so careless?" to "they deserved it".
Honestly, how many people do you know, who go through their Google account and Facebook settings on their computer, as well as privacy, location and sync settings on their phone. And that's without mentioning each application's settings.

 

Nobody deserves any of this. And I am actually questioning the previous assumptions about being careless, specifically for these videos.
A famous woman in her most intimate moment would normally be very careful with these videos, so I think someone else, probably the recipient, like quecko suggested, fucked up.

This comment doesn't make ANY sense, it just discloses something about your state of mind.

 

You can't delete backups on the iCloud server. Once something is put up there only Apple can remove it when they feel like deleting things.

The amount of nudes that celebrities have in the iCloud server that they think they deleted would boggle the mind.
