Non-white people can't be racist, dude. Racism is only possible with people of inherent from birth privelege/power. Something people of color don't have in the good ole' USA. I know this forum is obviously primarily white and straight, but can we try to refrain from all the racist/sexist/homophobic comments once in awhile? It gets old real quick

That's the sociological and full definition of racism (and sexism). However, most people use the word to mean hatred, bigotry, or ignorance towards another race. They're not using the academic definition, but the common language definition. So they're wrong or right depending on your classification.

I should also mention that this is probably one of the last places to have an academic talk about such deep matters. lol

 

I think you need to consult a dictionary. Racism is judging based on race - which race is irrelevant, and the race of the person who is making the judgments is irrelevant. That's what the word means, period. If it were only racist against minorities, then it would be a different word (anti-minority?). Moreover, whiteness has nothing to do with it - at best, the argument you're trying to make is that it's a reference to oppression of a minority racial group by a majority group, but white people aren't the majority everywhere, and even if they were, defining "white" is a gigantic can of worms that you're going to have a ton of trouble opening (especially since the definition has changed at least once each generation for centuries, ranging from the one-drop rule to including everything except people of direct African descent). As for Cornel West, while I like and respect the man as a philosopher, he is not authoritative on lexicography. And just because someone disagrees with you doesn't mean he's racist/sexist/homophobic. I agree with much of the argument you're trying to make, but in terms of defining the word "racism," you are unequivocally factually incorrect.

In other words, nope, racism is defined wholly independent of the race of the racist.
