not to say something against your profession but i don't see how an animal can treat a child with autism or other psychological disorders. To me once they have a disability most retain their disability all their lives. It might be a good case to make their standard of living better to be around an animal but it is not a cure in my opinion.

it depends on the child if it can be a cure. i never said it was supposed to cure though. of course with certain mental and physical disabilites you can only work on a few minor problems and it's mostly just something to make them feel better. but for some kids with behavioral disorders it can be a "cure" - as one part in a whole program of things.

You know i have always been skeptical about psychological disorders and mental diseases. I just don't see how most can be effectively cured and even the diagnosis is only an educated guess at best. am i being to critical?

the question is: what's your point? what are you criticizing?

i'd never talk about curing anything or diagnosing. i meet a kid, it can tell me things that are bothering him and i just let him be with my horse, only help out a bit and guide things. the target is to get the kid to help himself. some things can't come from the outside, they gotta happen from the inside. but i'm talking mostly about behavioral disorders here.
to get to mental diseases that's a different thing. sometimes there are way to cure them, sometimes they can't be cured, but the condition can get better.
in the end the only thing i wanna do with therapeutic riding is to encourage the kid, no matter what kind of disability it has or if it's healthy, to get him to know his own strength and his own skills cause that's what should happen in the childhood, in the process of growing up to become an adult.

well, actually i do diagnose cause it's part of the stuff you need to write down to have it all on a professional level. but i rather not have any diagnosis affect the work with the kid cause i wanna see what's up with him and not concentrate on the problem but rather on the person and where he's standing at right now.

but that's pretty much irrelevant for what i wanna do and the way i think about it
although so far my experience is that most psychological therapies work for someone. and that's the only thing that's important i'd say...

if you don't want to be gender specific use them or they. ;)

I know in German almost everything is described in the masculine form. ;)

unemployment, more and more poor families, divorces, parents with addictions. i think the need for ways to give children what they need in their childhood to grow up to healthy adults will only grow in the next years. being outside with animals and other kids is one way for that. and since more and more kids show problematic behavior in school and at home you often need someone who knows more than just how to give riding lessons.
