No it's YOU people who have changed it's meaning, it's called the English language for a reason
English - Pants = underwear (e.g. knickers/panties)
US English - Pants = Trousers

 

And we won't go into "fanny". It was Webster who published his "American Dictionary of the English Language" in 1828. It's our language you nicked it!

I tell you what, you can have the language back, but you also have to take back all the bible thumping prudes you sent over here to colonize the US. As the unofficial authority on pants, I feel a ruling us in order. If pants were underwear then there would be no need for the word "panties". Given that the word panties alone gives men an erection...pants must be of the long variety.

In America a fanny also means something completely different, curse them and their misuse of the Queen's English!!

 

The word pants comes from pantaloons, which originally referred to an outer garment (tight long trousers). The word was first shortened in 1840, but the term underpants didn't come into being until the 1920s. It seems likely pants used as underwear is a shortened form of "underpants" and not a shortened form of "pantaloons."

Also, I not only resent the implications in the comment, but there are some inherently wrong assumptions contained within. Bet you didn't know that most English people used to speak with an accent that very closely resembles Midwestern American dialect. There's a whole long story about why the British began using the accent now most commonly associated with them, but here's the lesson: Don't assume because the language first evolved in one place that all common or historical or "correct" elements of the language exist in that same place in the modern day.
