Like as much as I absolutely hate to say it, MRbeast is a legitimate celebrity. Because I know his name and stupid fucking face and unnerving smile, despite me never entering that sphere. He just showed up in my life one day. His smile creeps me the fuck out and I hope he dies in an "unfortunate" prank gone "wrong" involving a pallet of hammers at a home Depot or something. But I recognize that he is now a celebrity, despite where he came from. Because I know who he is despite not watching that type of content.

I agree with everything you said. Because people post on Phun, they know lots of names of celebs that 90% of the population would have no idea who they are. I think most people would know Natalie Portman from Star Wars. She's been in other stuff, for sure, but that is by far her most recognizable role.

I know the name "Mr. Beast" but I couldn't tell you what he is known for besides maybe being on YouTube, but in all my years of YouTube watching he's never once came up, so idk. I couldn't even tell you what he looks like, honestly.

Don't look it up. His smile is as unnerving as the worst psychological horror that indie movies can come up with.

Also, I think it's important to say that Natalie has succeeded in multiple types of movies. And yeah, she's most known for star wars, but you can probably rattle off half a dozen things she's been in, even without being a fan of her, or those projects. Same with Emma stone or Jennifer Lawrence, you don't have to like them to know who they are. That's what a celebrity is to me. I've never intentionally heard a Katy Perry or Taylor Swift song but obviously I know who they are and can identify a few songs despite them being VERY outside of my wheelhouse. Maria Brink is far closer to my style, but I acknowledge that she isn't on their level, as far as celebrity is concerned.

Agree with everything you said, Assgasm, except about Sydney Sweeney not winning an Oscar. If it happens in the next year or two, she definitely will. Not because of her debatable skills as an actress, but because she cozied up to the right people. I already even read a few stuff here and there on the internet claiming that the people in power are determined to give her an Oscar. We had a few examples over the years that the Oscars don't always go to the most deserving ones.

The Weight of Water, Nomadland, Everything Everywhere All At Once, Anora, won Oscars, so the legitimacy of the award is suspect at best.

Shakespeare in Love winning the Oscar over Saving Private Ryan was, I would argue, the most egregious decision.

And several years earlier, Sharon Stone not winning the Oscar for Casino was also incredibly stupid.

I’ve come to the conclusion a long time ago that most award ceremonies, whether for TV or movies or music, are rigged, and have been rigged, probably from the start. Everyone once and a while the most deserving things have to win to maintain the illusion that it’s NOT rigged, but I can assure you, it’s rigged.

Be it studio politics or nepotism or whatever, the whole operation is a charade.

The Academy actually changed the rules recently regarding voters getting dozens of screeners in the mail and then admitting that they hardly watched any of them before they voted. I guess moving forward, there will be quizzes to see who deserves to maintain their voting rights and who doesn’t.

Beyonce winning as a country artist is one of the biggest scams in awards history. Actual country music artists should be legitimately pissed about this.

Anora was the best film last year. And Mikey deserved her Oscar. In my opinion.

So when you guys are questioning legitimacy of things, remember everyone thinks differently...

That's true. In my opinion...it wasn't the best, but it WAS the most naked. I'm glad I watched it for that, at least. While I was watching it I was thinking, is Mikey as hot as some people say, or is it just because she's so naked? :thinks:

@lebadger You and I can agree on Madison being very deserving of her Oscar, but the Best Pic and Best Director awards were controversial to say the least.

@Xray may have been adding their personal opinions, but most of those "wins" were contentious at best.

And very few people at this point don't admit that Weinstein bought the Oscar for SiL. And I think many would agree with the point made about SS by @Clarence Boddicker as well.

But love the debate about movies as always.

I forgot all about Shakespeare in Love. I only watched it because it was an award contender, but I didn't think it was all that great.

Sharon Stone as Ginger Rothstein in Casino was, and still is, one of the best, most unhinged performances i’ve ever seen in a movie. She was leaps and bounds better than Susan Sarandon that year.

Totally inexplicable. But then again, they didn’t give Martin Scorsese an Oscar until The Departed.

    Go figure.

I can't judge whether the Oscar for Mikey Madison was deserved or not, but she wasn't the favorite before the ceremony. A conspiracy theory says that the award would go to Karla Sofia Gascon, but the controversies around her name made it probably go to Fernanda Torres, but then Fernanda's fans created a stir on the internet attacking Karla and the Academy decided to go with a safer choice in Mikey. Is it true? We'll never know.

^^^Interesting. I haven't read about that. Again, MM was pretty great in her role, so I didn't think much of a controversy when she won...
