@bobbibob has asked me to delete all his prior posts in the celebrity GIFs thread. It's all deleted. Can we all now let bygones be bygones?

I would like to close this thread and send it to the wood chipper, but I see there is a relevant question above. Leaving this open for another day or two for discussion about file size.

It's puzzling to me why anyone would want a 10+ mb GIF. I make this face whenever I see them:

I don't think I've ever seen a GIF under 10 mb, unless they're really compressed, and low fps make them choppy. Usually GIFs are way bigger than the source video. Most I've seen are 15-30 mb.

I try to keep my gifs under 10MB. They actually serve as previews of the videos I post (made from video sequences) and it would be rude of me to make a full-length video into a few-second gif that is several times the size of the video itself, and also lower in resolution. I thought about that in advance.

I noticed that some members are uploading the entire video as a gif and it is over 30-50 MB in size, which is too big for me, considering the resolution is reduced from 600-800 pixels...
That's why I suggested setting a limit. Of course, a gif can be larger than that, but it should be specified how big it is.
I'll suggest that it be up to 20 MB without specifying. I'd like to hear what anyone else thinks about this.

Well, ibb.co has a max upload of 32 mb, and Phun twist has a max of 25 mb, so it's never over that.

What about @trepka's statement that oversized GIFs may cause some users to inadvertently rack up internet charges... Don't the hosts that allow extra large GIFs also give a warning of the file size? I can't remember which ones and suddenly can't find any examples.

I find it a struggle to make a GIF of any quality under 10mb, the frame rate is poor as is the quality of the image. I use the ezgif website to make mine. I would happily like to make GIFs under 10mb if it doesn't compromise the quality. Maybe someone can start a tutorial thread on how to make lower size GIFs which are still good quality.

IMO 10mb a limit is a bit outdated, it could be done with being increased

I'm just a dabbler and exclusively use ezgif.com, but isn't this exactly what the Optimize tool is for? I might also Resize to cut down on file size.

The optimize tool is good but when you have a GIF which is originally 40+mb compressing to 10mb the result is poor. I usually keep a minimum size of x480 anything smaller than that is just tiny to me

Under 10 is hard unless it's really short like under 80 frames. The way I make gifs is I open a movie/tv/video in an editing program. Cut out the parts that would make good gifs and save it as an avi. I then open the video with Ulead or Photoshop . Then I crop, resize it, pick a speed, cut out shitty frames, and then save it as a gif.

I use Photoshop for gifs. I already said that short gif is my video preview of the video content I share, so it's a routine for me. And I make them under 10 MB (up to 20MB), with enough screencaps to keep visitors interested in a much longer video. I didn't mention 10 MB, but 20 MB for the limit for which nothing needs to be stated.

And I don't see the point of discussing the quality of gifs, if there is a video that is certainly better and has a higher resolution, but a smaller size. I can't understand how a 10-second video at 720x1280 resolution at 30 fps can be worse than a gif that is several times larger at a lower resolution and lower fps...
I understand that it's easy for someone to upload an entire video through an online gif maker and post it "for fame" :) But what's the point of burdening visitors and expose them to potential costs?

I just suggested that it be noted that the gif is larger than some size that we agree on as a standard. So when the visitor knows, let him decide for himself whether to click to continue or not.

I choose 400 as the size for my GIFs, which is generally less than half the full size video, and still it's 50x bigger in file size.

I think 25mh is a reasonable maximum size for GIFS most image hosts allow larger sizes but then it gets ridiculous

Can a poll be made? from 15 to 50 mb. And ask a clear question and reason why it should be introduced. As well as the option to stay the same...
