    I've been on a speed search for "frame drums," because there are examples from all over the world. (As a drummer/percussionist, I love this stuff!) Here is a link to many types of frame drums (which is an ancestor of the tambourine, for one)...

    The style of the open end of yours, Inuk, allows the sound to "spray out" of the drum, and actually be slightly louder.
