PM, down here, if you are going to spend any time in the woods or out in the rural areas, you learn about snakes...you learn how to walk and what to look for....it becomes second nature to you. I came of on a rattler while walking the woods waiting until 4PM (legal time to shoot dove)....this one was a bit longer that the one shown on the tail gate, but twice as thick...I dispatched him rather rapidly with my 12 gauge. All in all, I have probably killed about 3 dozen rattlers in my life. Some with hand tools like pitchforks, shovels, hoes and even my trusty homemade slingshot. :D

Dave Barry (the humor writer who lives in Florida) writes a lot about snakes in Florida. He makes it funny, though.

I grew up with our homemade slingshots....was shooting them from the age of 5. When I was about 8, I found a roll of about a quarter inch diameter aluminum wire that apparently belonged to an electrician. I heated and bent the wire and made several small size (would fit in you back pocket with nothing sticking out...good concealment. :D ). I also had retrieved several electrical train transformers out of trash piles, and saved the copper wire...this I used to wrap the aluminum wires together to give the entire slingshot more strength. My mother worked at the U of F Athletic office as a football ticket clerk then. They had boxes of rubber bands...the good kind that was like translucent amber color. She would bring several boxes of these home for me and I would knot and braid these together to make the rubber part of the slingshots....and last, again back to the trash piles around the neighborhood...old shoes to cut the leather tongues out to make the pouches. And yes, it was nothing for me to hit a rattler in the head from 6 to 8 feet away with a half inch pebble....I think growing up shooting slingshots is why I am so naturally good with a shotgun....you aim neither, you point them.

Long story.....hope I did not put you to sleep....:?

Well, they were custom made to fit my hand....as I said, they were primarily made from aluminum wire, which is not ridged. So you had to place your forefinger in one of the uprights and your thumb on the other, using your remaining three fingers to hold the handle in the palm of your hand.....and they were very small compare3d to the store bought slingshots. The rubbers were braided multi-strands, so they never completely broke like the store bought ones...and believe me, a single band on a high powered slingshot hurts like shit when it breaks...
