    There are some similarities, though it's less of a science with appraisers. That and appraisers need to be aware of housing prices and quality of living in the neighborhood of a particular house to give a fair estimated appraisal.

    My grandpa was a building inspector in a fairly major Michigan city. There's a lot of architectural knowledge required: math, blueprints, materials, etc. He started out as a carpenter. Built his own 7-cabin motel with my great grandad.

    Eh, you know how it is with a new job, it's a whole new system, then there's the politics, the after hours socializing, blah blah, on top of the same thing at then new living space. Doesnt leave a lot of time for phun.

    My grandpa did well. But his wife (my grandma) still operated a "tourist tome" out of their house for the work and extra money. (Now the house is a bed and breakfast in that city.) Lots of work because the city was growing at the time, so no laziness goin' on in that house.

    Their are different types of building inspectors, as you know. I forgot to say he was the chief inspector for the city, so he did the hospitals, hotels, etc.
