I really ought to create the Social Media Models forum.

 

I have pondered a similar question. Decades ago, a celebrity was usually someone with a notable talent, like actors or musicians. But in this modern era, you might have a layperson with 500k followers on Instagram, often more than some "real" celebrities.

Does the number of followers not automatic qualify them regardless? We would agree someone like Kim K is a celebrity, yet she is only "social media" famous too in a sense, with no talent to speak of. The distinction between "real" celebrities and social media ones would be indistinct.

 

I define celebrities as anyone who has gained popularity in the field of professional entertainment, be that theater, TV, movies, music, pro sports, and to some degree high fashion, since the two industries often overlap when they're being self-congratulatory. The Kardashians easily fit into one or more of those categories. People often confuse notoriety or fame (or worse, infamy) with celebrity. Being famous doesn't mean you're celebrated, it just means a lot of people know who you are. Genuine celebrities are both.
