I have owned three houses in my life and all three had fireplaces....the first one I bought in 1974 and the fireplace was all I used for heat until I was married in 1976.

 

There was a fireplace in my grandparents house when i was growing up. It was never used to heat the house. The house was too big, but it was nice to sit by the fire on a particularly cold winter day. I remember roasting chestnuts too. Its too bad you can never go back home again.

 

December before last I had a large diseased Oak tree dropped....I am still burning wood from that tree and may not finish it this winter either.

 

Thats efficient Do you usually gather your own wood or buy it?

 

Indeed...you can remember, but you can't go back. My grandmother had a fireplace too, otherwise, I would have never had any experience with one when I was young. Always like having one, so I just continued as I grew older. It is easy for me as I have a source of wood and don't have to pay for it with money....just my labor.

 

I chipped and shredded the small branches and cut up and split the larger limbs and trunk....nothing was thrown away. It either went into the fireplace or in flower beds as mulch.

I have never paid for firewood. I have family property about 25 miles from here that always has trees that need to be taken down or major limbs that need to be cut.
