    Well just right click on the layer in the layers palette and select clipping mask.

    Like I just did with this one.
    Above layer is my workspace with some booze and underneath I typed some text in another layer.
    Right click in the workspace layer and choose clipping mask ... will affect only to the text since the rest is transparent anyway.

    Makes sense ?
