    Our engineering is as good as ever, but our manufacturing capabilities are only about 25% relatively speaking with the 1940's.

    Probably very true. It's hard to guess when you cant find much that we actually make from concept to shelf any more. I cant argue it.

    I know that during the mid 90's I worked as a heavy setup man in a machine shop. We made davits for the navy out of edgewater florida. The gov held us to a .003 tolerance thru process. Then the Navy bitched our product was crap. So we sent a master tool and die maker to Norfolk to check it out. Turns out, after all our checking and gov inspections the installation teams on the ships, were, BY THE NAVY MANUAL, welding the plates to the deck, then bolting down our davits. Yep, 20 ton davits to operate the lifeboats were being welded to the deck at 1/2 inch tolerances then being bitched about the crap davit engineering.

    So I can see your point.
