    When I was still with airports I was in the City and waiting to fly home and there was a storm at home.. I remember being at the Terminal and I would call up my Maintenance Staff at the Airport and ask how the runway was. It was 100 compacted snow and gravel mixed. There was some snow drifts on it earlier but they cleared them off. I told them to make sure they do a runway check every 30 minutes and clear off any snow if it does accumulate. They were doing so already as I trained them very well.

    So before we were going to board they called all the passengers to the counter. I had just hung up my cell phone with my Maintainer and asked how the Runway was. He said it was still the same as before. The Agent called us up and said due to Bad Runway Conditions they are cancelling the flight up home. And we would have to pay for our hotels.

    I interrupted her and said “Excuse me, I’m the Airport Manager up there and just got off the phone with my Maintainer, the Runway is fine! Why are you cancelling?

    Her eyes got big and stammered. She told me they went mechanical. I reminded her when that happens you have to pay for all our hotels then. There was only 10 of us but they were all grateful I was there!
