Fuel savings coming to Nunavut

Nunavummiut will be saving a little money in the near future, thanks to a drop in gas prices and a boost to a fuel rebate program for homeowners.

Starting Friday, the price of gasoline in the territory will go down by 10 cents per litre, Energy Minister Lorne Kusugak announced on Tuesday.

Kusugak told MLAs in the legislature that the price drop was made possible because the government, which buys fuel in bulk and distributes it to communities, was able to buy gas at lower prices this year.

The lower gas prices made it possible for the government to reduce gas prices by 20 cents a litre earlier his year.

Speaking in Inuktitut, Kusugak said the latest price cut is good news just in time for the holidays.

Finance Minister Keith Peterson also brought good news for homeowners Tuesday, by announcing the government will continue its homeowners fuel rebate program for another year.

In March, the government offered a fuel rebate of $400 to assist Nunavut homewoners with the cost of living. Peterson said it is now raising that rebate to $500, in order to continue supporting local economies.

Homeowners will have to apply for the $500 rebate and notices will be sent to all communities shortly, he added.

Peterson said the rebate and the gas price reduction are steps the territorial government is taking to help homeowners and families in Nunavut.
