I still don't know what exactly newsgroups are. Are they free or what to download from them? I feel like a right noob, but I suppose I am really when it comes to all this internet technical stuff.

You mentioned FatherTed. The name rings a bell and I think I've seen his stuff before, but it could just be because he's named after one of my favourite sitcoms. The first site I started looking at celeb pics on was Robbscelebs, though sadly I think he passed away not so long ago.

 

I'm glad this came up. I can't git into Giganews! I just wrote their tech guys.

 

We've gotta be clear that I was on the periphery of the "founders" group. I followed everyone, but was too afraid to talk to a lot of those guys back then.

AFX, newsgroups are bulletin boards. They were what phun is today in 1978.
Instead of pages like this that we call threads, they had groups. This thread would be something like:

alt (for alternative or non official use).sancho-n-juiceheads(groupname).d(discussion)

or

alt.sancho-n-juiceheads.d

or

a.s-n-j.d for short

All you'd do would be open your newsreader (agent was the best) and goto your lists or your favorite groups, hit the one you wanted and read a post just like this (although not as fancy) and it was all in one big long page, till you got back to where the servers dumped the old content off. It existed many long years before the idea of webpages or the internet were even thought of. UseNet was the official name for it when DARPA net designated so much server space for the scientists to chat and share notes back in the 70's. Last i knew, there were about 100,000 newsgroups with more being added or killed off all the time. Hope that helps.

Same here. Let's just say, it's a LOT more friendly and easier to break into today than it was back then. I wasnt remotely involved with guys like GraphicResponse or Tuna. Mostly, you just helped out where you could, collected, and kept your head down and very quiet. Or you got flamed out of existence, or blacklisted. The efforts it took to get into a group like UIA or MIB was absurd. but there were a lot of us like PM and me that paid attention and learned.

 

So if you're a member of a Giganews type site you can pretty much download anything at fast speeds. Is this correct?
