    get yourself a bootable linux-dvd (one of these offering a complete, running OS without changing anything on the HD) and check the HD. (german pc-mags are stacked with these - and there are a lot of DL-links on the net (http://www.frozentech.com/content/livecd.php) with hints and tips for file-recovery).
    pretty sure most of the files (pics, vids, mp3´s) are still there. or attach the HD to any running
    windows-PC you have access to.
    just "a little" work, no need to worry (well, if the HD is still healthy).

    Looks like things are temporarily back online - but the diveguy is DEFINITELY buying a new harddrive this payday & the board & chip in January - this is just the early warning signs that things are on the downhill slope...
    thanks for the advice though - may grab one just to be able to save things if it happens again.
