UGHHH its so nice out and im stuck inside bullshitting yet another paper...but this one is 5 pages :-( and its on a book i only halfway read :-( :-(

haha its for my history of the jews class...its called "Fighting to Become Americans: Jews, Gender, and the Anxiety of Assimilation"

Think of what and how you would react if you were to try and make it on your own in another country. what would you do? what would you hope to accomplish? It is a universal plight of all people who have immigrated into another country/culture. I am sure you can search up clifnotes for your book, the rest is all made up, look at the current events. compare and contrast between what the jews tried to do and how they felt about assimilation vs. the hispanic communities and how they feel it is different. It is an ongoing issue as long as we have an open border policy in allowing people from around the globe to come in.

 

Ok, Im typing out the assignment....

After reading the book, write a five page paper in which you present the author's main thesis, that is, his or her main point or points. In addition, please explain how the author proves his or her thesis, and the extent to which he or she is successful in proving the thesis. Thus, you will not simply describe the "information" presented in teh book. You will write a book review, in which you describe and critique the arguments the author is trying to make. Naturally you will have to provide some evidence from the book to show how the authro makes his or her arguments.

You may quote occasionally, but you must use quotations only as proof of points you are trying to make.

 

So I feel like its kind of hard becaus eyou have to actually critique how the author proves her argument....

ANDDDD my teacher gave us a list of books shes already read, and we had to choose from those. So I cant really bullshit what the author is trying to say, right?

 

oh and some big words to use is cultural relativism, melting pot, tossed salad, and cultural pluralism.

you biggest area to bullshit on is your critique of the author's point of view on things. It is easier to write more about a subject that you disagree with than what you agree to. So if you disagree alot it would make it easier for you to critique how that person's point of view is wrong or can be expanded, etc. Get me some quotes about some of the points the author is trying to make and I will see about helping you critique it. Usually the first paragraph in a chapter will tell you the thesis and main points behind the chapter as well as the chapter title. This is not a tough assignment.

nooooo the idea that most socialogist had back then was our nation is like melting pot where all cultures eventually will be intermixed. But it is not always the case because we have enclaves of mixed cultures like china town, japan town, little saigon, little havana, etc. where the people don't mix in with the rest of our predominant society but carved out their own niche in our society as a whole. So instead of being a melting pot most would say our country is like a mixed salad where pockets of culture still and will exist. The social enclaves i talked about is a good example. Also here in my area we celebrate 4 new years every year, we have the persian new years, the vietnamese/chinese new years, the american new years, and and the Iranian new years.

 

Hmm...ok basically what shes doing is comparing the stereotypes of jewish men and jewish woman, and then showing how they didnt get along and couldnt form proper relationships because they both had their hopes set to high once they moved to america. like...she talks about how jewish woman were basically golddiggers, and they wouldnt marry a man unless he could "provide her with 3 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms." But the jewish man wouldnt marry a woman who was poor because he felt she would use him, but he also wouldnt marry someone who came from a wealthy family because she would use all of his money as well.

The whole book is basically her compiling quotes and documents from other sources and jumping from one to another. I am going to say that she doesn't properly analyze each quote. But I'm at a loss as to what else I should include.

It's hard because she repeats herself over and over, which is why I couldn't really get reading....

 

Well to understand why they chose a mate is very easy to do. You have to first understand the history of the jewish people in Europe. They were not allowed to own businesses. And hence their only source of income is loaning out money for interest. People back in the olden days who wanted to open up a business and have no money would go to a jew to borrow. Since to the jewish people their MONEY is their livelihood they are spendthrifts. Cause they had to! It was their only means of survival! That is why the term "jewed" or jews are synonymous for being cheap. It is because if you spend yur livelihood how would you make money? That i why they also had that stigma of being very harsh when you ripped one of them off by not paying what you borrowed. The jews were thought to have all the money hence that is another reason why they were so condemned. But to get back to your point of view, a jew's worth is based upon how much money he had because that is the ONLY way for him/her to continue to obtain wealth and a steady income.
