BTW, I hate the Star Spangled Banner. I think the melody is ugly and the lyrics are trite. America the Beautiful is a much better choice for a national anthem imho. A truly lovely melody and wonderful poetry, as those things go.

I've always liked ours; short and sweet, to the point.

Whenever i hear other anthems at events, i can never help but think they've over-egged the whole thing. Especially younger nations. We heard the Brazilian anthem for Massa after the Formula 1 race, and it fucking goes on forever.

 

Jimi Hendrix's version of Star Spangled is pretty fucking good.

Our national anthem should be instrumental, with people being allowed to make up their own words.

Our anthem should be dropped in favor of America the Beautiful, and the Pledge of Allegiance should be abolished, or at the very least changed back to it's original form - ridding the words "under God" - considering it's contrived origin.

I had a letter to the editor published in the paper a few years ago arguing that the original Pledge should be used and not the current one, which has actually been revised a few times.

 

Gives my mate some hope for his future.
